Is our economy a ladder that allows people to move upward through their choices and actions—or is economic mobility more like a lottery? Drawing on his research in economics, inequality, and political economy, Hoover will explore the promises embedded in our social contract and what happens when economic outcomes fall short of those expectations.
The conversation will examine income inequality, economic mobility, health care, artificial intelligence, and the relationship between unmet economic expectations and social unrest.
Hoover is a professor of economics and affiliate professor of law at Tulane University. His scholarship focuses on income redistribution and poverty, political economy, and ethics in the economics profession.
This event is co-hosted by the SMU Department of Economics, the Department of Political Science, and the John G. Tower Center for Public Policy and International Affairs.
A book signing will follow the conversation.
