Native American Heritage Month Kickoff featuring ICAE and Butterflies in Spirit

The Inter-Tribal Council of AT&T Employees (ICAE) is an employee-led nonprofit organization focused on celebrating Indigenous cultures, creating educational opportunities, strengthening community connections, and increasing Indigenous representation. Through programs such as scholarships, cultural events, and community partnerships, ICAE creates spaces where people can learn about Indigenous cultures as living, diverse, and evolving today.

Butterflies in Spirit is an Indigenous dance and advocacy group founded by Palexelsiya Lorelei Williams. Through dance and storytelling, the group honors Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+) and keeps their names, faces, and stories visible while supporting awareness, healing, remembrance, and calls for justice.

After the performance, ICAE and Butterflies in Spirit will stick around for conversation and education about their work and how we, as an SMU community, can uplift the voices and experiences of Native American and Indigenous people and communities, as well as pay respect to the Native lands on which we reside.

The kickoff will also feature a Frybread and Indian Taco buffet from SMU Catering. Come hungry and try this delicious food, make a new friend, and leave with new knowledge!
