Meadows Wind Ensemble: “Firecracker!”

“Firecracker!” will feature a guest appearance by one of the country’s finest high school bands, the Plano West Senior High School Wind Ensemble (PWWE), conducted by Jackie Digby. The PWWE is the premier band at Plano West and regularly boasts the most Texas All-State selections, both band and orchestra, of any school in the State. In addition, PWWE regularly receives First Division Ratings and accolades at state, regional, and national festivals and competitions. The MWE is thrilled to welcome the Plano West Wind Ensemble and Jackie Digby to campus for what promises to be an incredibly exciting afternoon of music making!

A program highlight will be a performance of Richard Strauss’s Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare by combined brass and percussion from the Plano West Wind Ensemble and the MWE. While the PWWE’s repertoire is still to be selected, the MWE will feature Meadows alumnus, Dallas Winds and Shreveport Symphony Orchestra oboist Abigail Hawthorne as soloist on Michael Daugherty’s Firecracker! for chamber orchestra, Igor Stravinsky’s elephant ballet Circus Polka with dancers, and William Bolcom’s Concerto Grosso for saxophone quartet and wind ensemble, featuring four Meadows student saxophonists. What a way to celebrate the end of a truly great concert season!
